SHORT TRIPS IN AND AROUND KIGALI

up to 40 minutes drive.

MOUNT KIGALI

Target: Fazenda Sengha on Mount Kigali

Trip Time: 30 minutes.

Route Description: Take the Road to Nyamirambo, Pass the Stadium and follow the main road to Karama. Turn Left when you see the Sign "FAZENDA" and follow the signs for about 2 km.
"Fazenda Sengha is a beautiful place which brings enjoyment and fun to families and friends looking to spend some quality time outdoor".   You can come to eat at the Restaurant. There is also a designated pick nick place. You can do Archery, Horse Riding, Zip Lining, Jumping (Trampolin) and more. There's also the possibility to rent Quads and discover Mount Kigali in a different way.

MOUNT GIKONDO

Destination: Juru Park & 1000 Hills Destillery

Trip time: 30 minutes
From town, follow the road up to Gikondo. Continue the cobble stone road upwards. Google Juru Park. It is on top of that Mountain (target the big Antenna). It is located in a beautiful garden where you can sit back and relax. Probably the worst customer service in Rwanda (please let me know if it changes). Takes hours if you are courageous enough to order food (even if you pre-order). I recommend to stop for a drink. Then you continue downhill on the other side towards Kicukiro and you go for lunch or dinner at the 1'000 Hills Destillery.

KANOMBE

Destination: Rwanda Art Museum

Trip time: Less than 30 minutes.
Historical place and museum. Former presidential house with exhibits on Rwandan history and debris from a noted plane crash.
I have never been there since it has been refurbished and became an Art Museum, but for sure it is worth a visit. It's located close to the Airport in Kanombe. Pass the Military Hospital and after about 100m make a left turn and follow the sings.

DAY TRIPS

Ideas to spend memorable days

"THE FISH PUB" AT LAKE MUHAZI

Time: 1hour 15 minutes

A place of serene beauty. Great food, great get away for a meal away from the city on the shore of lake Muahzi and an unforgettable bike trip through the beautiful hills to the lake. The music choice, the beer temperature on a hot sunny day is sublime. I would remommend to anyone who wants to leave the city but not wanting to go too far. The service is very good and teh food very tasty (my favorite is the juicy and tasty beef burger). Also the fresh tilapia grilled to perfection is as affordable as it is delicious. Should be a weekly riding destination. It's always good to reserve a table in advance.
Route description: Follow the road East direction Akagera. At Nyagasambu, turn left to leave the tarmac road and follow the natural roads uphill. When you reach the top, turn right and follow the wide street for about 5km's. Best to turn on now the GPS to find your way to The Fish Pub. The Fish Pub: +250788380699.

SPEND A WEEKEND AT CYUZA ISLAND

2 Days 1 Night

2 Days motorbike trip to Cyuza Island (Burera Lake)

description: Cyuza Island is in the middle of Burera lake, with an amazing view on Muhabura volcano (cf picture). Around 5 people are working on the Island to keep the place clean, host the guests and manage the crops and of the animals (cows, pigs, chickens). They have 5 fixe tents of 3-4 people + 5 moveable tents with mastress and blankets. It is very ecological: almost food autonomy, solar panels, dry toilets, etc… you can do free Kayaking, Cliff jumping in the lake, camp fire, milking the cows before breakfast, etc…

Price: 12k/night/person + 20k for the boat + you can order food from La Paillotte (5 to 10k / meal) + They have all kinds of beers already there.

Booking: The Island is owned by the restaurant La Paillotte in Ruhengeri. To book a night there, you just have to call La Paillotte (+250 785 523 561) and say you want to stay at Cyuza. Here is the pin of the boat station where you can park the motos and go on the Island:

Road trip: chose between tarmac road (3 hours) or dirt track (5-6 hours).

To go there, I took a very nice dirt track going between the twin lakes. Crazy views and sensations!

On the way back I took the regular tarmac road from Musanze to Kigali: Very nice curves and landscapes!
